Acne Treatment

There are four factors generally involved in the development of acne:

  1. Increased oil production
  2. Increased skin cell turnover
  3. Increase in the p. acnes bacteria
  4. Inflammation

Before we can carry out treatment, we need to find out what type of acne it is and what is causing it.

Mild – this is when it has no inflammatory spots. Scarring is unlikely. There will usually be blackheads and/or whiteheads.

Moderate – this is seen as a mixture of blackheads, whiteheads and inflammatory spots.

Severe – this is characterised by an increased number of spots, with evidence of scarring and inflammation. Nodules, which are hard, raised spots that extend deep into the skin, will be present. Breakouts are cystic. It is important that medical advice is sought, therefore you will be recommended to see one of our dermatologists.

The Myths Around Acne

  • It is not caused by eating too much chocolate or sweets
  • Poor hygiene does not cause it
  • It is not contagious
